Alerted Leopard

This leopard is part of an 18-sculpture series commissioned by South African businessman Johann Rupert for Leopard Creek Country Club, South Africa's premier golfing estate. The 18 sculptures are a sculptural narrative depicting 18 progressive moments in the day of a leopard from waking, to hunting, to resting and finally, to slaking its thirst. The 10th in the series, this shows the moment when the leopard senses the presence of an intruder in its territory. Choosing to work in the landscape from which he draws his inspiration, Lewis sculpted these pieces under a lean-to shelter on his Stellenbosch farm. The influence of his deepening fascination with landscape's natural textures is evident in these leopards, and was to become progressively more dominant in his work.
